The 1985 landslide was the result of historic rains and flooding caused by a tropical wave that emerged off the coast of west Africa (later spawning tropical storm Isabel). It was the single deadliest landslide on record in North America, killing at least 130 people in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
I am attempting to think with and hold near Puerto Rico, especially the southwest region, in the wake of Hurricane Fiona. Many communities and neighborhoods are still without power and clean water more than two weeks after the storm made landfall.
